The artist Abd al-Rahman Marei was studying engineering when fate played with his life path and tested him with facial cancer, during that difficult stage in which the artist was forced to stay in the hospital for long periods the loss of his ability to speak at the time, and the only outlet for him to communicate with the outside world was through writing, and here was the ordeal that was born from the womb of the ordeal, where he discovered in himself his love for Arabic calligraphy and his creativity in forming letters in different Arabic scripts, The inkwell, pens, and paper became his tools to build the world around him and the safe collar to escape from what befell him.


After that, Abdul Rahman changed his studies from engineering to physiotherapy and then specialized in art therapy, Abdul Rahman produced his first works and gifted them to family and friends, and he also gave gifts made by his hands on social occasions, the Arabic calligraphy paintings in particular impressed the people around him, and those who knew him began to ask him to draw paintings, so he started selling until the demand for calligraphy paintings increased, so he studied Arabic calligraphy at the University of Jordan deeply and comprehensively, took some sales courses, and started his own project “Medad” in 2019.


Abdul Rahman named his project "Medad", which is the old Arabic name for the ink.


This project is based on making paintings drawn in Arabic calligraphy, and drawing through Arabic calligraphy on different materials and sizes, with the possibility of designing special works in innovative and attractive ways. Abd al-Rahman uses in his project "Medad" multi-material paper of cotton, linen, or papyrus, It is hand-polished using starch and egg whites, and there are acid-free organic papers.


Works are written with pens of reeds or wood of various origins, Egyptian, Turkish, Javanese, and Iranian, and each type of pen has characteristics in terms of writing in bold and another for formation, including what is suitable for heavy or light inks, he also uses inks, most of which are of his own making, as they include gum Arabic, honey, distilled water, and natural dyes.


Abdul Rahman faced many challenges and obstacles when moving forward with his own project, but an ambitious person never gives up. His project requires time and effort, but Abdul Rahman's passion made him enjoy making and designing his paintings, but he faces difficulty in expanding because he handles the entire process until delivery.
